 The Flying Sikh


The Greatest Indian Athlete ever. Fighting poverty and deprivation he reached the pinnacle of sporting in 1960, when he broke the world record for 400 mts in 1960 Rome Olympics. So great was the nationwide appreciation for this hero that when he returned from Rome, Pt. Nehru, the then Prime Minister had gone to receive him at the Delhi Airport.


 Sunil Gavaskar


The first batsman in the world to aggregate more than 10,000 runs in Test Cricket. He totalled 35 Test Centuries a record that remains unbroken to the this Day. Sunil Gavaskar ruled the Indian Cricketing scene for a decade and a half. 

His legacy is being carried forward by Sachin Tendulkar.

PT Usha 
The Greatest Indian Women Athlete. She was born in Kerala and she made her International debut at 1980 Moscow Olympics. The zenith of her career was reaching the 400 mts hurdles finals at Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.


She garnered five Gold Medals in Jakarta Asian Athletic Championship in 1985.
Pt Usha collected four Gold and one silver medal in the Seol Asiad in 1986.

Sania Mirza has broken into the Top 50 ranks in the WTA Rankings. She is now ranked at 48. After being at Rank 169 at the end of 2004, she had set a milestone of reaching top 50 by the end of 2005.

 Jeev Milkha Singh--son Of Flying Sikh


Jeev Milkha Singh on Sunday added a golden chapter in Indian golf when he lifted the Volvo Masters at the Club de Golf Valderrama and became the first Asian to win in Europe.
The biggest win of Jeev's career came when he calmly carded a one-over 72 and collected the winning cheque of Euros 666,660 (USD 840,855), the biggest cheque won by an Indian in an individual sport.
Jeev, son of great Indian athlete Milkha Singh, had redeemed his career winning the Volvo China Open in Beijing earlier this year and since then has not looked back.


Pargat Singh


Born on March 5, 1965, at Mithapur near Jalandhar cantonment, Pargat Singh had his early education at a village school. Afterwards he joined Lyallpur Khalsa College. Jalandhar, which produced players of the calibre of Ajit Pal Singh and Surinder Sodhi, both former captains. Pargat Singh played as Full Back for India in Junior & Senior Indian Hockey teams. He led India in 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. For his meritorious services he was awarded Padam Shree & Arjuna Award by Govt. of India.


The sports fraternity here has hailed the appointment of Padma Shree and former captain of the national hockey team Pargat Singh as the Director, Sports, Punjab.

 World Rapid Chess Champion- Vishwanathan Anand

One of the best known non-Russian and Asian chess players, Anand has often been given sobriquets like “Lightning Kid” and "Vishy, the Tiger from Madras". Born on December 11, 1969, he picked his early lessons in chess, at the age of six from his mother, Susila Viswanathan.

By 14 he was the “Boy Wonder” in Indian chess and his assets, lightning speed, ability to see and read the game far ahead besides on-board intuition saw him emerge as the Youngest Indian National Champion at age of 16. 

In 1987 he became the First Asian to win the World Junior Championship at Baguio City in the Philippines. The same year he became the first Indian to earn the coveted Grandmaster title.
As he grew in strength and reputation, in 1991, he won the strongest tournament at that time, The “Reggio Emilia” in Italy in 1991 ahead of Kasparov & Karpov. 
The pinnacle of his career was achieved on December 24, 2000 when Anand became the 15th World Chess Champion in Teheran. Anand won the championship by remaining unbeaten. By winning the title, Anand becomes the First Asian to win the title ending many years of Soviet Domination of the Ancient Indian game.
